The Food and Drug Administration today approved a new drug application for Viagra to treat men with erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, the brand name for the generic drug Sildenafil, has been on the market for more than a decade.
Last year, Viagra lost patent protection after the drug's manufacturer agreed to pay $1 billion to settle lawsuits.
The drugmaker is also working with drug regulators on a new class of drugs that could help men suffering from erectile dysfunction.
"We're pleased to announce that the FDA has approved Viagra as a treatment for men with erectile dysfunction," said Michael A. McAdams, the FDA's head of drug safety and regulatory affairs. "This approval opens up new avenues for people with ED to take this medication."
Sildenafil, sold under the brand name Viagra, was approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction in 1998.
But more recently, a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel has voted to recommend that it not treat erectile dysfunction in men, as Viagra's maker is challenging its argument that it can be used alone.
It was not until the FDA approval of Pfizer's Viagra that it became clear that men with erectile dysfunction often need drugs to manage their symptoms.
For example, a study of men with erectile dysfunction found that Viagra can help men achieve and maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual activity.
Viagra, a newer drug launched in 1998, contains the same active ingredient as Sildenafil, which is the active ingredient in Viagra, which has been on the market for more than a decade.
When the FDA approved Viagra, its maker, Pfizer, agreed to pay $1.2 billion to settle lawsuits over Viagra's patent.
Since its launch, the drug has generated millions of dollars in sales for Pfizer and is now the top seller in the United States for erectile dysfunction.

In this issue ofThe Week, author and pharmaceutical industry analystRandy Seeborgexplains why Viagra could be a viable treatment for men suffering from erectile dysfunction.
“There are several reasons why a man's ED is so prevalent,” she told theWeekly Call
Viagra is a medication that's used to treat erectile dysfunction. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps a man get and keep an erection.
Sildenafil, the brand name for sildenafil, was approved for use in 1998 and has been on the market for more than a decade.
Viagra's maker, Pfizer, agreed to pay $1.2 billion to settle lawsuits alleging that Pfizer's drug caused men with erectile dysfunction to "suffer from severe, persistent erectile dysfunction (ED) in the first place."
The company also reached a settlement agreement with Pfizer over the Viagra patent in 2012.
Pfizer settled claims against the company for $10 million, a figure that would have been more than $3 billion if it could not have been so generous.
The Viagra lawsuit also contends that Pfizer failed to adequately warn consumers about the risk of severe erectile dysfunction.
“While Viagra is a highly effective treatment, there are significant precautions for patients who take it,” the suit alleges.
In a statement to the, Pfizer said it was "respectfully sorry for the inconvenience and waste of legal fees."
In addition to Viagra, the company is also reviewing how the Food and Drug Administration can resolve pending FDA approval of an alternative drug for erectile dysfunction.
Last year, the FDA asked Pfizer to submit a supplemental safety review of its drug for use in treating erectile dysfunction.
The agency is also reviewing whether the company should be required to disclose the risks of the drug to the general public.
As part of its efforts to resolve the Viagra lawsuit, the FDA also will review the company’s approval process and submit its proposed drug application, theNew York Timesreported.
The cheapest erectile dysfunction (ED) pills are generic Viagra, called.
The term "generic" refers to the active ingredient of a medicine or drug rather than to the advertised brand name under which the medicine is sold. It is a term referring to any drug marketed under its chemical name without advertising.
Pfizer made the originaltablet that is often referred to as the “blue pill”.The patent expired in 2013 which then allowed other pharmaceutical manufactures to make a generic version under the name of the active ingredient called Sildenafil. They are exactly the same medically and perform in the same way with the same side-effects.
As with most branded products, Viagra is sold at a higher price, therefore the generic tablets sold asare much cheaper.
Medically there is no difference between a generic medicine and the branded medicine, as they both have the same active ingredients to make them perform in the same way. They only differ in the “bulking” agents used to fill the tablet as the amount of active ingredient required, in this case Sildenafil, is very small. This makes the tablets bigger and easier to handle.
The main difference between generic andbranded named prescription medicines is cost with generics being much cheaper
Every pharmacy can choose what price they sell at, as there are no fixed prices. It will depend on what price the pharmacy can buy the drug from the wholesaler and the cost of their own overheads. They can they decide what mark-up they require and some pharmacies choose to sell some products at higher prices.

You will then know and have the confidence that all the brands being offered are genuine and will work in the same way. All the pharmaceutical companies are inspected by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to ensure they manufacturer the drugs to the same quality standard. This means that the key ingredient that is referred to as the “active” ingredient is exactly the same in all brands.
The other inactive ingredients that make up the bulk of the tablet are called “excipients” and can vary.
For those people who are allergic to or have an intolerance to lactose, then the is ideal for you as it is lactose free. You can check the additional excipients on the patient information leaflet supplied with your tablets.
Although medically all the generic tablets are identical, they may look different as they can vary in colour, shape and size due to the varying excipients.
The patent for, owned by Pfizer, expired in July 2013, which then allowed other pharmaceutical companies to produce generic. There are a number of companies now manufacturing which include Accord, Ajanta, Dr Reddy’s, Mylan, Teva, Torrent and Zentiva. Even Pfizer make a that they sell cheaper than Viagra although generally more expensive than the equivalent generic brands.
